Drug Use and the Consequences |
||
West Midlands Police β Advice on Drug Use, Risks & Local Support in WolverhamptonDrug use can have devastating impacts on individuals, families and communities. West Midlands Police want everyone in Wolverhampton to understand the serious health, legal and social consequences of drug misuse β and to know where to turn for help and support if they or someone they care about is struggling.
π¨ Why Drug Use MattersUsing illegal drugs β or misusing legal substances β isnβt just a personal issue. It can: Cause serious health risks, including overdose, respiratory problems, mental health deterioration and long-term dependency. Increase vulnerability to exploitation, accidents and violence. Lead to criminal charges, fines or imprisonment for possession and dealing of controlled substances. Fuel other crimes such as theft and anti-social behaviour. West Midlands Police tackle supply and community harm through enforcement operations across Wolverhampton and the wider region, working to disrupt drug dealing and keep public spaces safer for everyone.
βοΈ Police Approach & Support PathwaysWe recognise that drug dependence is often linked to deeper health and social issues. Thatβs why policing in the West Midlands combines enforcement with pathways to support, not just punishment: π Diversion Instead of Arrest Where appropriate, officers may refer people found in possession of drugs to specialist support services rather than pursue a criminal prosecution. This approach aims to treat drug misuse as a health issue, encouraging engagement with treatment and reducing re-offending. π Offending 2 Recovery Programme The Offending 2 Recovery initiative offers tailored, free support for people whose addiction may be driving harmful behaviour, helping them access treatment and rebuild their lives. The programme works with partners across health, housing, education and employment sectors β giving people in Wolverhampton a real chance of recovery. π Life-Saving Responses (Naloxone) West Midlands Police officers are now trained to carry and administer Naloxone, an emergency antidote that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save lives while waiting for paramedics.
